Other recent activities have included the rescue of a couple of gopher tortoises. The first, a mature adult who lives on my property and is one of a breeding pair. I found it upside-down but apparently uninjured near my mailbox. I was so anxious to turn it right-side up and make sure it was okay that I didn't notice its gender. And once I'd righted it, I wasn't about to flip it again to see; I'm sure it had enough of a fright for the day. After a few minutes, I was happy to see it quickly walking back to its burrow. The other was also a full-grown tortoise crossing a busy highway as I was exiting my bank's parking lot. I quickly angled my car so oncoming traffic could see my flashing headlights. They know what that means, and traffic will usually stop until this protected species crosses the road. This was not just a narrow escape for the tortoise - there were also a couple of near collisions as two drivers, not paying attention, nearly ran into the cars stopped in the road. The speed limit is 55 mph here, and there were squealing brakes and tire smoke, and there were tire tracks left on the road. One of the drivers, not slowing down much, swerved between the stopped cars in the left lane and a car that was moving on in the right lane, which the tortoise had just cleared. As it quickly swerved back in to the (unseen) tortoise's lane, I was sure it had been hit. Fortunately, it escaped unscathed, and another car stopped to carry the tortoise to safety. (I'd have done that myself if I hadn't needed to signal the oncoming cars.) I think the tortoise must have had a fairy or two looking out for it, and a few others undoubtedly protected the kind and observant people who stopped their cars. [Gopher Tortoise wiki] |
